Our Facility

The Pacific Region Compost facility (PRC) is the first facility in Oregon permitted to accept food waste for composting. The facility is able to compost all food waste, including meats, bones and dairy along with green feed stocks such as wood and yard waste (Mixed Organic Waste).
It All Began With Wood
The PRC first opened in the early 1990s as a wood recycling facility. By 1992 the facility was composting yard debris brought in via curbside collection. Click here to see how the Pacific Region Compost has changed and how we collect food waste.
Adding Food Waste to Compost
In order to help Willamette Valley residents and businesses find a beneficial reuse for food waste, we worked with Oregon DEQ to develop a pilot program for mixed organic waste and in April 2010, we became the first site in Oregon permitted to compost food waste.
Mixed organic waste is now being collected from many locations throughout the Willamette Valley for processing at the PRC. This material is being composted using a state-of-the-art active aeration system. The material is placed in rows on a concrete pad and covered with plastic. Pipes pull air through the piles of compost to facilitate biodegradation. Air going out from the piles then goes through a bio-filter to absorb any odor before it comes in contact with the outside air. Nearly two acres at our facility have been paved for this process to ensure that compost the material will have no impact on ground water.
Compost Use
Compost is a natural fertilizer and soil additive. Many area farms and vineyards are already relying on this material to put recycled organic materials back in the earth. Contact us today if you would like to know more.
